Because the phones call are handled by radio towers whose coverage area in known by the industry as a cell. As the user moves about the handline of the call is passed from cell to cell. Therefore cellular or "cell phone"

"Cell" refers to the full word "cellular". A mobile phone works in areas within a certain distance of a signal tower. These areas are referred to in the US as "cells". The "cell" phone works when you are within a cell area.
I guess we just liked the name and it caught on.

Americans change everything to make themselves feel independent. Football= A sport where you can't use your feet. And the way the school system set up. Man every other country is ahead academically. They think they are smarter but are not. I'm American but I've traveled and man if America could see all the things they do wrong they would shut up.
