It serves a dual purpose, and neither one has anything to do with getting women or getting a promotion at work.

After shave has lot of alcohol in it, and it works as both an antiseptic, to clean small nicks and scrapes from shaving, and to help close your pores, which open up from the heat of the warm water while you shave.

Other than that, it's just a good excuse for expensive fragrance companies to try and sell you their product. In the good old days, all aftershave came from the drugstore (remember how your Grandpa smelled like Old Spice or Brut?) but now it's marketed with men's colognes in department stores, where they will tell you about the necessity of layering your products so you will smell good all day long. It's bunk. You can use the cheapest stuff you can find rather than a $45 dollar bottle of Polo, and it still does the same thing. Better yet, you can use diluted rubbing alchohol and rinse your face well with cold water.

The purpose is as an antiseptic. In the old days plain witch hazel (an antiseptic) was used and is still the base. Later the products you see today were developed and colognes were added as a way to win sales and of course make the customer smell good. It also contains alum which is a clotting agent to help stop bleeding on the skins surface.

After shave has an antiseptic and therefore it takes care of any cuts or bruises that may occur during a shave. Next best thing it does is to provide a fragrance that stays on.

Primary use is to make a profit for the company that has successfully marketed it:

Secondary use is to make you feel good about yourself and to enhance your odor receptors.

Pore closing, etc., is just part of the ad hype.
