First thing we would need to know - How much money are you willing to spend?
I wouldn't worry about dual core's too much. Sure they are extremely powerful but for just playing games you can get by just fine with just one processor.
For a gaming PC, you'll want:
- Plenty of RAM. Go for 2GB I'd say.
- A graphics card with plenty of memory.
- A good sound card. 5.1 surround sound at least
- A good speed processor
- A large hard drive. Modern games can take up several GB's of space.
I have a PC with a 3Ghz processor, 1GB of ram and a 512MB graphics card. It can still handle most modern games (e.g. HL2) even though it's 2 years old. So don't go too overboard :)

Glad to help, I myself build computers, If i were to personally buy a computer I would go with AMD X2, get atleast a 7600gt videocard, atleast 80gb HD, and atleast 1gb memory, Some people might say no you want a Intel system, if that's what you want get it, I personally don't recommend them. One reason being it is normally cheaper to get an AMD based system, but that doesn't mean the system is gonna be bad. This is a good place to start if wanted to buy a gaming system... http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=106. Again if I were to buy as apposed to build I would buy from there, great selection, good deals. Hope I helped.

It is better to go for a P4 3ghz processor along with Latest chip set and 1GB RAM. Along with the above I suggest you to go for a Graphics Accelerator card which allows you to play games.

Don't buy E-machines or HP(compaq). Emachines break down very fast, and HP(compaq) are easily virus infected.
