Gollum (as Smegal) found the ring buried in the mud at the bottom of a lake - it had obviously been left there undiscovered for some time.

So why couldn't Frodo have buried the ring in a similar place to get rid of it? Why go thru' all the hassle of going to the mountains of doom or whatever they were called?

Please, don't say 'because it makes a good story' - because I disagree. It doesn't.

Anyway, in essence, why didn't the Hobbit just bury the ring?

Just to clarify - the ring was obviously UNDISCOVERABLE by the black riders and orcs at the bottom of the lake, so why tha FOOOOOOOOK didn't Frodo do it too???

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest!!! Feel better now. Now go on, enlighten me ...

OK!!! to start off with the ring was only discoverable by the black riders when they sensed it or they found the carrier(frodo). The riders sensed the ring when the person wore it, so it made it easier to find. The orcs in the other hand just had to find the carrier because they couldnt sense it.
Frodo couldnt bury the ring in the lake because he became obsesed with it. You should have noticed this by the way he glared at it. Plus if he buried it in the lake it would leave a chance of the ring being discovered and getting into evil hands. Therefore he had to destroy it.

In 'Fellowship of the Ring', that was Frodo's initial idea himself. I can just hear the dialogue in my head right now. He told Gandalf he would put it away and never speak of it again, because no one knew it was here in the Shire.

Gandalf nipped that idea in the bud by telling him that Sauron's minions had already discovered that it was in fact at the Shire, thanks to the answer Gollum provided when they tortured it out of him, and that the Ringwraiths (Black Riders) were already on their way...which of course they were.

Frodo was already planning on doing just what you're asking about, but the Riders were too close for it to make a difference. Don't forget, THEY CAN SENSE THE RING'S PRESENCE. It would've been completely pointless for Frodo to hide it when the Wraiths would just sniff it out, no matter where it was buried, and kill Frodo for doing so.

You can't deny though, it DID make a good story...

P.S. There's two other indirect factors, which a few people stated above (Frodo would become obsessed, Sauron would continue to live and rule), which are good points as well, but this is the essential one.

P.P.S. In the prologue, it shows that Sauron had just been defeated and his minions faded along with him. His rebuilding of strength during 'Fellowship' would have affected, say, the Ringwraiths as well, strengthening their senses and capabilities.

Good Question man. I think giving the political weight of the ring, Sauron, who has supernatural powers had rule of Middle Earth for thousands of years and the next biggest Power belonged to The Elves. The Elves tried to defeat Sauron a few times and in turn were defeated. With the guidance of the Elves they knew someone "simple", not of extrodanary power would be able to get places the Elves could get.
The only course of action to save middle earth was to destroy the ring because it wasn't just any ring it was the same ring forged by Lord Sauron. Frodo's life would be in great danger if he had knowledge of the rings whereabouts, he would either become obsessed with it and turn out like Gollum or just wind up dead. Keep in mind the ring was also thrust upon Frodo by his uncle who had used it enough for the ring wrathes (SP) and the eye to know where it was. He was being followed by omniscient forces. It was a matter of life and death.

because someone would eventually find it again as golum proved when he found it and that person might be easily swayed by the ring and it could have fallen back into evil's possession and then that would have meant the end of middle earth altogether and everyone would have died!

But, what i want to know is, why didn't they just fly to the mountain of doom on the back of those giant eagles instead of walking all of the way there!? That's like saying why don't you travel by bus, train and boat to Australia from London!! I know some of the races of middle earth arn't meant to be very bright but gandalf at least could have come up with that!

Edit: and if I can come up with a sollution to the whole problem of destroying the ring where it would take only one film to tell the whole story, then I'm sure some of the saddos on here, who sat and watched it 20 times or whatever, could have done as well! I've only watched it 4 times.

Not because it makes a good story- the key is that Gollum FOUND it, even though it was years and years later, he still found it; so if Frodo had buried it, sooner or later, someone else would have found it. And that someone else likely would have been one of Sauron's people (or creatures rather). So if he had hidden it, it would have sort of been like him shirking the responsibility of destroying the ring really - and he wasn't going to do that :) So they had to go to Mount Doom because that was the ONLY way it would be permanently destroyed.

Actually the ring was found by Daegol and Smaegol murdered him to get it. The reason it wasn't buried was because as long as the Ring existed The Dark Lord (Sauron) would also exist. The ring had to be thrown into Mount Doom to completely remove the threat of Sauron from Middle Earth forever.

This is because the Ring had begun to awaken. Gandalf says this and about it being dormant for all this time. Also, the reason Frodo went to destroy it is because once it was destroyed Sauron would perish. Seeing as Sauron had plans to wipe out the world of men the best ways to stop him was to destroy him. The only way to do this was to destroy the ring. Not hide it. If they hid it, then Sauron would have lost at Minas Tirith but when Aragorn released the spirits Sauron could have attacked and the army of men would have no chance against huge army the dark lord had left.

where do i start lol
when the ring had first been lost sauron had just been over thrown now because he was bound to the ring he was defeated in body but not in spirit now the ring has a will of its own so does everything it can to try and return to sauron anyway while it was lost saurons spirit returned to mordor and set about making himself strong again and formed armies of orcs men and other creatures that were his followers so by the time bilbo came to find the ring sauron was getting stronger by the day and was able to send his servants to search middle for the ring and every time it was put on it called to him so if the hobbits tried to get rid of It it wouldn't take to much searching before it was found and be put back into saurons hand and also each person who bears the ring becomes bound to it and so would not be able to dump it and leave it there the ring would call to them and they wouldn't be able to leave just like gollum who followed it right to mount doom and like bilbo who found it hard to leave it and kept wishing he could have it back so the only way to ensure the ring wouldn't eventually return to sauron was to destroy it .

EVER WISHED YOU HAD NT ASKED LOL

First off..... DEAGOL(smeagol's cousin) found the ring at the bottom of the lake..not smeagol.
If Frodo wouldn't have gone on his perilous journey, Sauron would have become to powerful and Middle Earth would be destroyed. The Ring had to be destroyed before Sauron could take over the world.

Because if it was found once, it could be found again! If it was destroyed it could never be used for evil again. If Sauron found it it would have meant destruction and enslavement for the whole of Middle Earth - not a risk worth taking.

Edit: Burying it at the bottom of a lake is hardly a permanent solution. Tides and erosion mean it could have easily moved and been found, whether ten years later or one thousand.
