Personally, I think it is little more than that... or has turned into little more than that. The people who control the scene in Hollywood have their greatest following in those who have the largest access to the public. There is no or little substance to how the liberal way of thinking works in reality and so they want Hollywood to show the citizens that their beliefs are "fact" because too many people believe what they see in the movies.
And any reliance on Hollywood for morals and fact is abhorrent and asinine to begin with. It's unfortunate that so many people view films such as Farenheit 911 and Supersize me as fact just because they're labeled "documentary". Though they may have had fact in them, they were based on a one-sided point of view. (We all know that McDonalds is unhealthy. Who eats there 30 days a month though?) It's a little like believing that Survivor is a true show about survival. No... it's a show about dissing your fellow campers. It it really were about Survival, someone would have died on it a long time ago.

Liberals do not presume to be experts in every field they talk about. Why do you think essays have references? And besides, sometimes a film puts a point across better than some schmuck can say it. Films are a powerful form of political propaganda, no question. But how can you say the propaganda isn't true? Maybe one should actually judge these film-quoting liberals by the films they quote? But of course you would demonise visual media as a source of liberal lies - you, or someone influencing you, would prefer that Republicans have that domain all to themselves.

some points are better made with acting out of the scene than trying to out it into firm simple principle.
right to life is a simple message, but you must see the way it impacts people in their lives to understand what is behind the principle and what is lost if you enforce it strictly. so movies work well
They have long been used for right-wing ideas too.
many war time films made in hollywood in WWIII were pure right wing propaganda designed deliberately to influence the public and advance a certain political agenda. ITS OK. this is all part of the marketplace of ideas.
The recent film "Path to 911" is a good example of right wing propaganda today. I am sure you can think of other movies you liked that espoused your own view. It is freedom of expression so stop trying to knock it or stifle it.

Hmm...I've never read a liberal's answer that says such a thing. I guess it can go both ways. After all, what about Rush Limbaugh and FOX news for starters? It's not film, but it's right wing bias just the same via radio and TV. I think most people have the capability of telling the difference between fantasy and reality, whether they are liberals, moderates or conservatives.

Since I've never done that and I'm probably what you would consider a liberal you can't say that liberals always do it. That makes the whole premise of you question flawed.
If you've never referenced a movie or a book or a song in order to help make a point then you are unique.

I am a film writer / producer / director. I do not work in Hollywood
nor would would I (the reasons are not relevant). But in all
fairness to Hollywood, there are as many conservatives as
liberals.
All you have to do is look at what happened to Michael Moore at
the Oscars. His own peer group booed him off the stage,
Thank you very much, while you're up.

I have never saw or heard any politician sending people to see a movie for drawing attention to a point.
Nevertheless, a lot of times it is easier to understand a point through a movie or through a character than just talking and talking. So I can understand if somebody does it so.

I think you are generalizing. I would never say something like. I have no need to appeal to authority to make a point.
