I don't look down at singers who don't write their own lyrics, if they have a great voice and bring passion to the song, but if they DO write their own, I appreciate it more.
As far as rappin' goes, if you can't write yo own stuff, you got NO bizness spittin'.

I'd say no because some of the best written songs are from talented writers and not performers. A song that is well written and performed by someone who can "feel" the lyrics is something I can appreciate. Now I do have a problem with some of the rappers that sample music but even in that some of the arrangements are very good. I know, call me a hypocrit but old school rappers made a lot more original music then what is being put out today. R&B artist can be guilty too, Mary J Blige has built a rep of sampling music but I "likes" me some Mary J.

I definitely look down upon rappers who don't write their own lyrics, but not as much for singers. I feel that singing requires a certain kind of talent in terms of vocal ability and being able to hit notes. But reciting rhymes as in rapping doesn't require any special talent. For example, Jermaine Dupri doesn't write his own rhymes and I think anyone could deliver rhymes like him without a great deal of effort. But I doubt that everyone could sing a song like Mariah Carey or Alicia Keys unless they had vocal talent (or professional studio machines). I look at rappers as poets and if you aren't writing your own rhymes then I don't see how you can call yourself a rapper.

Yes. I definitely prefer listening to bands who write their own lyrics. It makes listening more interesting.

If all artists wrote their own lyrics, then the songwriters would be out of jobs! They are very talented people - they just can't sing! That would be like expecting actors to adlib all of their lines.

as long as someone part of the band wrote it, then im ok, but if its someone totally different, then i kinda get mad and stop listening to their music... not really, i judt don't really like that singer as much as i did before. and i think it does show a little bit of lack of talent.
