There are quite a few in top positions in the U.S. Most women have been unable or unwilling to do what is necessary to reach the top of the pyramid. If a woman wants to have children she will need to take time away from work. It is more important for her to raise her children than work her way up the corporate ladder. That takes many women out of the race to the top.

Much of it comes down to numbers. A good percentage of women never enter the workforce; they prefer to remain home to care for the house and children. Many more women work part-time to supplement family income and are not career-driven.

That leaves only a small percentage of women who are even eligible to "reach the top of the pyramid". You should examine the the percentage of women at the top as it relates to the number of eligible women (you'll probably find that it is a healthy percentage that may or may not equate to that of eligible men).

On a related topic, many women complain that they want equal pay for equal work. Let's address that: I guarantee that corporate management, and especially corporate shareholders, would choose a woman over an equally qualified man if she was available at a lower salary. If there was an actual disparity, men would find it very hard to stay employed.
