They don't 'have to be' at all, why do you think the Laura Craft movies are so popular ? There are lots of sci-fi & fantasy like Underworld with strong females, but . . .
Laura Croft does not have super powers or ray guns (and not a vampire herself), . . . she is regular person with NO wimpy behaviors.
Check out Tomb Raider / Cradle of Life, my favorite.
Oh, yes . . . and 7 years of the smallest girl on the cast, kicking demon & vampire bu/t . . . Buffy !

Not in all movies (e.x. Tomb Raider), but yeah in a few cases its true. Its all about what the writers and directors decide, I guess men are better fit for an action packed or fighting type movie, which I believe myself. Men tend to be stronger, flexible, since they usually play sports a lot more often and tend to go to the gym as well, while women pretty much just hang out with their girls at the movies... or whatever. With this being said, I again mention, men are usually better fit for a fighting scene, but it depends on the individual because some women can take such a role.

I always wondered why women are portrayed as they are in some movies; unrealistically. For instances; we are to believe that with the right training, all women can beat men in fights, even though out weighed by 100 pounds. Take " Kill Bill ", for instance. Some people actually believe that is how a sword fight, with that many men, would go. I can't turn on the TV, without some woman doing something that I know is not possible, on average. The media needs to get back to " real ".

Have you ever watched the Terminator, Lara Croft, or heck, any movie Queen Latifah has ever played in? Women are not always weaker in movies. Look at the Mummy, the character Rachel Weisz plays is by far stronger than her cowardly brother. In older films such as Casablanca the women were weaker because sometimes all a woman wants to be is the one being rescued. Sometimes it is nice to relate to someone who doesn't have to put on a strong face day in and day out.

i ALWAYS wonder the same thing! It's because that's what writers and studio execs THINK people wanna see. However, you have strong female characters, like BeeBee Kiddo, Vernita Green and Oren Ishi-i in "Kill Bill", Jackie Brown in the movie of the same name, "The Lady" in "The Quick and the Dead" (Sharon Stone was TOOO cool!), Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider", and many more.
I think it all started off with Buffy the Fearless Vampire Slayer! After the dismal film, it was Sarah Michelle Gellar's combination of teen ditziness with her ability to kick some SERIOUS butt, that sold the franchise!
ANd let's not forget the Sig Sauer-packing Agent Scully in "The X-files"!
Yes, the entertainment world Is NOT as barren of female talent and strength as people think. You just have to know where to look...

I personally enjoy the movies or shows where the women both kick *** AND cry. Crying is human and normal, nothing wrong with that.
Like on Buffy when Caleb and The First Evil were winning, she was crying but then later she also wiped the floor with them both.

I can think of a few horror and science fiction movies, if that's your thing, that not only have very strong women, but also, they are the only ones to escape when all the men have been killed.
Alien, Alien v's Predator,
Event Horizon, Ghost Ship, Saw1 & 2.

I hate those movies where you keep yelling at the girl, pick something up and help him! What's the matter with you? And if I see any more girls fall down as they are running away I will get sick. I liked Ripley in Alien. She is my poster girl.

In a male dominating society, women get less importance than men. Films are part of society.
But there are exceptions.

Because most movies are produced, written and directed by men, and most male producers, screenwriters and directors are very sexist. They put their stereotyped vision of women on the big screen.
