In recent years, historians have wondered if Thomas Paine was, indeed, the author of the Declaration of Independence instead of Thomas Jefferson. The following link states many of the reasons for this assumption. http://www.crookedlakereview.com/articles/67_100/76july1994/76williams.html

However, one must also remember that Paine did not come to America until 1774. Moreover, Paine was mainly focused on trying to publish "Common Sense" at the time that the committee was drafting the Declaration of Independence, then he began "The American Crisis" series immediately following the success of "Common Sense." In addition, Paine had very little influence in politics until he published "Common Sense."
Therefore, I personally believe that Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence, but he was influenced by many of Paine's writings and beliefs.

Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" was a major influence on Thomas Jefferson as Jefferson wrote the D of I, but Paine was never involved otherwise in drafting that document.
