Have the about car with nearly 95k miles; usually at around 65 the car goes from running very smooth, to a suddent vibration and noise that sounds similar to the rubber coming off the tire; however, no effect on steering and tires appear to be in ok shape; however, there are 16 inch on two front, and rear are 17. Now I am thinking that maybe this is causing a problem with AWD operation suddenly trying to kick in, or something. I have tried shifting into neutral at the speed with vibration occuring, but putting in neutral does not change the condition.

NOTE----->
On ALL AWD cars, it is imperative that ALL the tires and wheels be matching.
It is recommended by virtually ALL manufacturers (Subaru, Chrysler, Honda, G.M. etc) that even when replacing tires, that they be changed ALL at the same time, or severe damage to the transfer case/transmission WILL result.
Get them back to factory sizes and match them.
Check with your local tire store, and ask a qualified ASE mechanic / technician for direction.

Good Luck
