Oprah might have said that but she didn't come up with that herself. I can't tell you who came up with that because I don't know that myself but I first heard it a long time ago and I certainly didn't hear it from Oprah. Personally I don't think it's true, not so much because "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but because in part what we consider attractive is conditioned by our biology (the preference for symmetrical faces and bodies, for example). That alone invalidates the whole 'we're attracted to people as beautiful as ourselves and vice-versa'.
Anyway, if you want to learn a little more about physical attractiveness, about what's biologically conditioned, what's culturally conditioned and what's "in the eye of the beholder" I suggest you read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_attractiveness

In many ways, Oprah is looking at a deeper concept than the surface looks - and it is more than just the outer skin that you are talking about here.
She is looking at the "Whole Person" concept -- what is the person's behavior, their personality, their minds, their emotions like? That is what can be VERY Attractive to any female -- because ...
Beauty is ONLY skin deep -- UGLY goes right to the core -- and an Ugly Core is DEFINITELY not attractive. When you concentrate on the skin, you are missing the most important part of a person -- their core personality.

If you see yourself as a "10", then you will be attracted to others that you perceive as being "10"s. It doesn't matter what anybody else thinks about who you are or how you look, because in the end how you look at yourself is going to determine who you feel comfortable with. It's like the movie Shallow Hal.
Some people are more beautiful than they think they are. Some people are not as great as they believe themselves to be. The only thing that really matters is how a person sees himself--that is how he is going to relate to the world.
