I agree with everyone about the car. I'm originally from Chicago and I can honestly tell you that the transportation system here is a joke. The "DART" system is terrible and can't get you anywhere. Because Dallas is so spread out, the lack of an adequate transportation system is really a downer. The plus side is that the downtown area is a joke so it's not much to drive down there as opposed to a "real" big city where you're encouraged to take public transportation.
Also, you're coming at a good time because the weather is mild. During the summer, your electric bill will skyrocket so be prepared for that.

You do not want to stay in a hotel for two months. Recommend that you find a small apartment close to the DART rail and look for a job downtown. You will need about $2000 for deposit, furniture rental, transportation to find a job.
As another alternative, what is your background? Many newcomers to town with a good solid background and some child care experience find employment as a Nanny. These jobs pay great, often include room and board, and sometimes even include a car. There are services here where you could send your resume before you get here.

A car in Dallas is a much better option than cab service. Our light rail DOES have apartments/shopping areas on or within walking distance of the rail stations, but Dallas is a spread out city, and the rail service does not go to all areas, yet.
Check out the websites about Dallas, wikipedia provides good links to things in the city. Do your research before moving.

Oh dear, I agree that you must have a car, our transportation here is a joke, and you had better win the lotto if you are going to rely on taxis. Plus, you need a place to live. The tow priorities should be , roof over head, and steering wheel in hand. Good luck, I don;t know where you are coming from, but I am sure you will LOVE it here, there is so much to do, and the weather is mild, plus you can actually find a job if you want. There are great schools here too.
Welcome to Dallas. (I live in the suburban Town of Flower Mound, it is lovely)

Electric, water, and rent are higher here. Groceries cost more in some areas and if you want to go out a lot you'll need money to go to the good places. Plus great clothing and it's not cheap. You can ride the bus very cheaply, license will only cost $18 to change over and you can do that on the internet.

Having grown up in Dallas, I can tell you that transportation costs are an essential. When you say "bus ticket" and "cab service", that scares me because of the costs involved. Let me ENCOURAGE YOU GREATLY to save for a car, a GOOD, RELIABLE car. I'm sure you've heard this before, but Dallas, which generically includes all of Dallas/ Ft. Worth and the Mid-Cities area and the "suburbs" of Dallas, is a wide-spread area and is very mobile and highway / car oriented, so, save what you can ( I know that's hard, but . . .) and be on the look for a reliable, gas-saving, small car. It'll be good for career and social activities, and shopping, etc.. I know you know all this, but having grown up there in decades past and having watched my "home-town" continue to spread, I can't emphasize this enough. I wish you the best and I hope my "home-town" is good for you and to you. God Bless you.

Deposits for utilities and parking costs, First and Last month's rent (which can be in excess of $2,000.00) If you have a pet a pet deposit is required most of the time. If you plan to buy, money for closing fees, emergency money in case you should have to go to the hospital. These are the few I can think of. I hope you love your new city and prosper there. Take care. Nana
