The NFL playoffs work in the following fashion. The divisional champions automatically qualify for the playoffs, and each conference has two wildcard teams, that are based on season records, and tiebreakers such as head to head meetings, divisional record, conference record, points differential, and so on. The first round of the playoffs is called the WildCard Round, because that's when the wildcard teams are playing. The two top teams in each conference are given byes into the next round. The second week of the playoffs is called the divisional round, because that's when the two top seeds in each conference are playing their first playoff games. The third week of the playoffs
is the conference championships, where the two teams remaining in each conference battle for the right to represent their conference in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is currently
contested between the champions of the AFC and the NFC, and
the winner will be crowned the Super Bowl champion. If you want a reference, go to this link:

The winners of each of the four divisions in each league go to playoffs along with the next two highest teams in the National and the American Leagues. Total then of 12 teams in playoffs. The 2 teams that won their division and have the best records in the National and American Leagues receive a first round bye. After that 4 teams from each league play with the best records against the worst and second and third playing each other. Then those two winners from each league play for the League championship. Then the two league champions play in the Super Bowl
