Cromwell was a military dictator. During his reign of terror, 10% of the population of Great Britain and Ireland was murdered. This is a figure that Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot could only dream about. Saddam was not even in that league.
OK. In the UK you've got a one in 500,000 chance of being killed by a religious zealot. That's got to be better than one in 10.

I always thought that Cromwell was quite an effective ruler for his time. After all what most people wanted was a bit of piece and to be allowed to get on with their lives. It was his son who was not so good at the job which is why they brought Charles !! back to rule

I remember it well.
We all knew where we were in life.
Olly, stood for no nonsense, we had a lot of people migrating here then. They had to work, live by our rules etc. They still migrated here and stayed.
Yes we had some very bad times, but that always happens.
I even remember that we stopped Religious war too, at a price of course.
Because of the stability caused we started to become a real world player.
Decent chap Olly!, I wonder what became of him?.

I'd say it was fekin worse, he shut all the pubs, theatres etc and dancing was even sinful. 10 out of 10 for the republic tho.

I think so because there was no religious freedom, no freedom of speech, you couldn't even wear what you wanted and many families who supported the King had their homes and property confiscated and were homeless. You were suspect if you did not go to the "puritan" church, could not sing or dance and were supposed to be pure in thought, word and deed!!

Couldn't have people tortured and executed without much cause of evidence? That's a big difference!
