Fender has a 12 string electric they just started making them again for a short time.Only advantages i can give you for the 12 string is that it has a beutiful harmony song that cant be made through a 6 string unless you use a pedel and still doesnt sound as good as the real deal.My opinion is it's not worth getting unless you want to play a 12 string always. They do hold you back on lead and playing faster and there also a pain to restring, but if thats what you like go for it.

if u tone down to D or lower go with a heavy gauge, also heavy steal sounds nice on strat if ur into southern blues type stuff. I use a mix of strings i put extra light 9's- 14's on the high e, g, and b then heavy 50's on the low end. it heavy on the low end and light and fast up top. I use DR strings but ernie ball makes great strings to. just play around untill u find one u like, there is no right or wroung brand or size it's all in personal taste.

12 strings can give a fuller sound to the chord you play depending on the style of music you like. I have only ever met people who can play them with a plectrum and i agree that they are better in acoustic, they can be a bit harsh on the fingers aswell. In saying that i love my 12 string it was something a bit different if you're looking for a new music venture. If you wanna see a different guitar check out the bass one of the players has in a band called the kerbcrawlers. (just google them) I'm told there are only 6 in existence but i'm not sure of the accuracy of that.

The cranberries use a 12 string in some of their songs, it's not limited to church

I'm guessing it's a completely different tool for a completely different job. Like asking whether a lathe is better than a milling machine.

I confess I'm a bit down on twelve strings, mostly because I've only really seen them used in church, with chorus pedals and playing endless major seventh and sus4 chords. Are they any use for rock? Mmmm. I'll watch the answers and hopefully get an education.

12 string is better on acoustic guitars, it limits the lead guitar pieces that you will be able to play.

It makes a different noise. Choose an instrument that suits your style of playing.
