In the U.S. most people are moderates, but the 20% on either side of the ideological spectrum, the Republican party favors small government, meaning no or very little governmental interference in the affairs of the average person, but a large military budget, the Republican party has recently catered to the very religous portion of the U.S., and the Republican party favors a nationalistic foriegn policy, advocating what it percieves to be in the best intrest of the United States, and on occasion the Bush administration has advocated a foreign policy very similar to Woodrow Wilson's, the Republican party is also very pro-business, with little government interference, in the true capatalist mode. The Democratic party believes in large social programs to aid the poor and elderly, a small military budget, and an activist foreign policy, though latley they have relented on this, the Democrat's favor regulation of business, to favor the worker, so they say. That is what their platforms say anyways, they rarely follow them completly, except sometimes maybe in spirit, rather they usually use them only to be elected.

Setting our differences aside for a moment, I've noticed this difference:

Democrats have more faith in people's character then Republicans.

For example, democrats believe one role of the government is to provide assistance to those who are not doing well, where republicans try to clear a path for those who want to succeed, or who are already doing well and want to do better.

Where the difference lies is that democrats believe disadvantaged people will benefit from the government, where the republicans believe most people will abuse the government programs, regardless of their actual needs.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Essentially none, it's more like a team sport there, same principles and rules but the two competing sides keep each other from 'going native' and taking over all as always happens w. one party states. Theoretically Democrats are supposed to be more left ie Labour, Republicans more right or Conservative but it is v. mixed eg. Dixie democrats voting Democrat while being far right conservatives.

Traditional Republicans are fiscally conservative, pro-business, against high taxes (or any taxes), do not want to spend a lot of money on social services like welfare, free healthcare for the poor, public education, etc. The new type of conservative spends a lot of money on wars that serve business interests, especially oil business. The third kind of Republican only cares about moral issues like gay marriage, abortion, teen pregnancy, and prayer in schools. These are fundamentalist Christians.

Traditional Democrats care about social services for the poor and middle class, are pro-union, believe in taxes being used to provide a social safety net for the least fortunate Americans, are mostly pro-choice (abortion), in favor of gay rights, in favor of small businesses and higher taxes for the rich.

Moderate Democrats believe in most of the above, but may be against welfare, and want to stop illegal immigration. They may be more in favor of policies that help business.

More women, poor people and minorities are Democrats. More men, white and rich people are Republicans.

Since people are giving silly answers, I'll chime in with my favorite from Dave Barry:

"The Democrats seem to be basically nicer people, but they have demonstrated time and again that they have the management skills of celery. They're the kind of people who'd stop to help you change a flat, but would somehow manage to set your car on fire. I would be reluctant to entrust them with a Cuisinart, let alone the economy. The Republicans, on the other hand, would know how to fix your tire, but they wouldn't bother to stop because they'd want to be on time for Ugly Pants Night at the country club."
