Last summer I put a cabinet up for my mom in this exact same place, hers has worked out very well. We bought the cabinet from walmart. The stuff that doesn't get used very much goes above the cabinet and the top shelf. We went about 28" above the lid on the tank. We decided that if we ever had to change the guts in the toilet we didn't want to be banging our head there either. Here about a month ago my brother changed the guts in that toilet and reported no problems.

The answer to this question depends a lot on the cabinet. If it is only 12"-14" deep, then you only have to mount it high enough to lift of the tank lid for your toilet. If it is deeper then the other two answers above are applicable. I would say 24"-30" above the tank would be good - then you could mount a reading light under the cabinet and maybe a towel or Magazine rack.

High enough so you don't bang your head when you stand up after using it. Since most ceilings are 8 ft high, You wouldn't want anything over 18" in height and nothing deeper than the tank behind the toilet. Personally, I think that's a crappy place to put a cabinet.

How about mounting it on the opposite wall? People will accidentally drop or knock stuff out of the cabinet and it will fall into the toilet.

i'd sit on the lid, then turn around an mark my height from sitting position. then i'd measure about six inches to a foot above that (don't want anyone baning their head from the throne). or some people like it at eye level standing up. why don't you check a pitcure in a magazine, call home depot e.i. and do what ever makes you comfortable.

I'm a cabinet designer - typically I set them at 50-54" above finished floor.

EXACTLY what "mickdotco" said....
Sit on down and see where you have to have it so you don't bang your head on it. There is NO rule... Just YOUR opinion on where you would like it!
Happy Hanging !
