I do not want to spend hundreds of dollars. Somewhere in the $40-$50 range is as high as I would like to go.

Cambridge Soundworks has a set (sub-woofer and two speakers) that are excellent and cost $49.
The set is call PCWorks.
We have 4 of these sets in the family and I think it will amaze you when you hear the quality and the richness of the sound they produce.

I have Logitech X230. They work really good. I connect it my IPod and get good clarity from that too. These are about $60. For your price range try Creative SB 2.1 It is about $ 30.
