I have group health insurance through work. Open enrollment is in February. I remember when I signed up a few years ago, maternity coverage was extra and had to be added to the policy. I got married this year and want to add it to the policy now. I also have PCOD, so we want to start trying to get pregnant now. I am 24 and he is 28. My insurance is through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (they were closed Thursday and Friday), and I'm anxious to know if we can start trying soon or if I need to wait until February. Anyone have any suggestions? The Blue Cross website doesn't help.

I just found my "certificate booklet" on the blue cross website. It says that I have "Maternity Care Visits (first visit only) (includes pre-and post-natal delivery)(PCP referral not required) ..........$500" What does this mean??

Unfortunantly Georgia doesn't have an insurance mandate to cover fertility treatments so if you will be doing anything like fertility drugs, iui, hsg, etc. then the insurance doesn't have to and probably won't pay. If you don't have the maternity rider now then it will be considered a pre-existing condition and won't be covered. Also, most blue cross companies only allow you to add the maternity rider at the inital time of application and the only time you can add it later is if you get married. But if you get married and want the coverage you have to apply within 30 days of marriage. You may be able to add it come Feb. but you may not either. Good luck!
