There were several reasons: the real estate became too valuable to be used as an outdoor theater, only one viewing of the movie can be shown without fresh customers and the megaplex theater concept with many small theaters and a single movies and high customer turn over sounded the death knell for drive in theaters.

I miss them too. There are a few around. I know there is one in
Cleveland on Memphis Ave. When I was little we used to go all the time and there was one in Indiana that would have 4 horror movies going all night. Also remember the Nudist Camp movies
where I had to hide behind the seat. I peeked sometimes.

Because, in many areas, drive-ins can only be opened seasonly and therefore are not profitable enough to stay open. Some have held swap meets and local events to remain open over the years, but, overall real estate agents and developers will encourage them to be bought out. I loved the drive-in as a kid, I remember seeing the "Rescuers" and "Riki Tiki Tavi". My husband and I actually saw "Dr. Giggles" at a drive-in, while we were dating.

they still have a few around. There is one by my place that is only open during the summer on the weekends and it usually plays 2 movies for like 10 bucks or something.

they're not all gone. there are a lot of drive-ins in small towns especially in the southwest, and they all get better business than the other theaters.

Yeah I have no idea. The drive-ins i thought are funner that going inside the theatres. More privacy and you don't have to worry about anyone kicking your seat (god i hate those people).
