One of the worlds' great mysteries.

As one of the people above me said....They support someones right...even if it's a mistake. Well if it's a mistake...Why the hell do you support it?! But yet, smoking is a mistake, and you do everything in your power to stop smokers. Damned Hypocrites!

Here's a question...if an unborn baby is a female... aren't you taking away her right to choose?

Hey, death penalty opponents...think of the death penalty as a 'late term abortion' ....

I don't get it...kill the ones who have not sinned, and save all the sinners. Nice.....

First off, not all liberals support abortion and oppose the death penalty, and not only liberals do so for each of these issues. There is some correlation though. A pro-choicer will disagree with your premise that abortion kills "unborn babies" in first instance - a fetus is not considered a baby but a blob of cells that may become an unborn baby only much later on. I'm not aware of any opponent of the death penalty who would say that murder should ever be excused. Opponents of the death penalty however are convinced that the disadvantages of the death penalty overweigh its advantages, and may also oppose the idea that the government should have the power to take people's lifes. The only advantage of the death penalty that i can think of is that it makes for good vengeance. It's disadvantages are that it doesn't seem to have an effect as a deterrent but rather makes it more likely that a murderer or rapist kills witnesses or the victim in order to improve the chance to get away with the crime; that capital punishment trials are very expensive (more so than any others) and that errors cannot be corrected once an innocent has been executed. Edit: dudleysharp posted links to a decidedly pro-DP website. I'll just pick one example of the arguments used there to illustrate how quickly that website jumps to conclusions: "Possibly, 0.4% of all those sentenced to death since 1973 may have been actually innocent. All were released. An incredible record of accuracy - 99.6% accuracy in proper actual guilt convictions, with the 0.4% released(1)." This argument begs the question - from *some* convicted being found to be innocent and released it jumps to the conclusion that *all* innocents are identified as such and boasts this as a great success of the accuracy of convictions.

Okay - two seperate issues in one. Shiny

1. Abortion
Personally, I would prefer if people thought ahead about the consequences of sex and didn't have abortions. However I don't believe in imposing my personal beliefs on someone else. I believe that it's none of the Government's business what I do with my body. I don't believe it is the Government's role to invade the privacy of a person. Considering in most other respects conservatives are against intrusive Government, why on this one issue are they so FOR the Government butting in on what people do behind closed doors.

2.
If you could guarantee that ONLY the guilty would be executed, then maybe more would be in favour. However when you consider that a class of Illinois journalism students proved that 13 out of 25 people on one death row were completely innocent, you should begin to understand the roots of out problems with the death penalty. The death penalty is not a deterrant (studies show it may actually increase the murder rate), it is unfair (the mentally ill, poor, males, and ethnic minorities are chronically over-represented on death row), it is cruel, it reinforces the idea that killing someone is an acceptable way of solving problems, it is based on retribution not justice, an it is useless: Killing a murderer does not bring his victim back to life.

If you're pro-death penalty, you're not pro-life, just anti-abortion.

Oh - actually, 3rd issue. Why is the phrase "liberal" considered an insult anyway? In the dictionary, the definition of liberal is "free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant" and "open-minded". I would have thought the average person would want to be free from prejudice, and open minded?

Why do conservatives support war and death and not abortions?
Progressive thought is, it is your responsibility your body to fight or not, to have a child or not. The problem with the two words criminals and terrorists is very tricky. The party in power defines such words. If you do not have rule of law and try to protect the rights of the accused we have a government such as Iraq had under Saddam.Currently PETA is considered one of the worse terrorists threats by the FBI. This is people for the ethical treatment of animals, all work is done legally .

They're supporting a woman's right to choose, not necessarily backing abortion itself. Also, many people do not view abortion as taking a life, but rather eliminating a mass of cells. Most abortions are performed very early on, before it amounts to anything more. Partial-birth abortion is another story, and I do not agree with that. As far as not supporting the death penalty, my opinion on that is that the "eye for an eye" brand of justice is futile.

Liberals believe the right to choose must always be protected. The woman that has an abortion made a choice. The murderers and terrorists that kill people also made a choice. Liberals feel if the choice is available, then it must be allowed, regardless of consequences.

Frank J gave the best argument against abortion I have heard so far.

Killing a female fetus (if it was old enough to have its sex determined) takes away that fetus's right to life and therefore its right to have an abortion if it became a person like it should have, so really liberals contradict themselves in their own beliefs.

Abortion is an assisted suicide of a fetus that has no say so in the matter. Yet the assisted suicide of an elderly person who is terminal and wants to die is illegal. And for someone to be in Death Row and about to die. Has used all of there appeals and is there for a reason. Not like in the movies, real life. Yet sex offenders still rome free. I say castrate the bastards. and if they do it after that cut off there hands no wait then they will use there stubs....To hell with them kill them all and let the devil sort them out.

I'm a liberal and I support the death penalty. Why do Neo-Cons say they are pro-life, but would do everything in their power to destroy poor or homeless children?

Abortion is a womans right to decide over her OWN body, the death sentence is arbitrary and has DNA's advancements have proven we've killed innocent people, also the death sentence is handed out to minorities in disproportionate numbers leading to the question of whose justice is being served
