How about giving them the gift of YOU! You already have an attitude which will probably come through when you give them their gifts and wait for them to open them. Is dad a sports fan - or theater, opera, ballet, etc? How about GOOD tickets to a game (or other venue) -- and the chance for the two of you to go. Ask him to dinner before hand. Let him choose where - or ask his favorite dish and prepare it. LEARN about the sport, ballet, opera, or whatever before you go so you can talk intelligently about it. Dad will see you as an adult - one he raised right, and will probably not blow off your gift - because the gift is you!
The same goes for your mom. Most moms would rather have their children WITH them than giving them something. Or try making something for her. I bet she still has that little clay ashtray you made in kindergarten. Do you paint, write poetry, crochet, knit, etc.? Handmade means made with love. Does she garden. Give her a certificate promising to spend a whole day in the spring helping get her garden ready for the coming growing season. If you are together, she'll love it. Just be sure to honor the certificate - and when you're done, share a pizza and some talk.
Another thought I have: Was dad (and/or mom) raised during the Depression or was he poor as a child? These people often have difficulty accepting gifts they see as "not necessary" because they had to be such penny-pinchers when they were younger. It's not the gift, but the idea of spending what they see as an unnecessary amount on something not really needed.
Give them the gift of you - and you can't go wrong! And you might even enjoy it!!!
P.S. If they still seem to be unappreciative, accept that this is who they are - and love them anyway. After all, they are your parents. You wouldn't be here to complain if they hadn't given you life.

Go to http://www.oxfamunwrapped.com where you buy gifts for third world people, like drinking water, a donkey, mango trees etc. and the person/s in whose name you have purchased the gifts (your parents in this case) get a fancy card saying that you have donated the money for the donkey, or a loo, or whatever, in their name. How can they criticise such a charitable thought?

They should be grateful that you went out and bought them something with your money. You didnt have to do that, but you did to be nice. Get them what you think he would appreciate, and if he doesnt thats his loss, not yours.

my first response is to say get the ungrateful people nothing but then it is christmas so why not get a gift certificate. that way they can choose their own present, but then that would probably be wrong too!!
