Short Ciruit - The robots were suppose to be the US Army's latest weapon system to take out enemy personnel and tanks with its laser. One of the Generals in the film describes "Operation: Gotcha Last" in which the robots would be programed to carry a nuclear warhead into Red Square in Moscow in the event that the US wasn't able to launch its missles.

War of the Worlds - The "robots" were actually alien vehicles left on Earth thousands of years ago designed to terraform the planet for colonization. The aliens had visited Earth long ago and planned to use humans as the the nutrient base for their plantlife (the red vines) that would alter the ecology of the planet to something similar to their home world. Thing was they had to wait thousands of years for humans to reach sufficient numbers.

I, Robot - The robots were servants (like theh NS-4's, NS-5's, and Sonny) or automated workers (like the demolition bot in front of Dr. Lanning's house) designed to replace human laborers. The cars could technically be considered robots (in the role of transportation) since they use artificial intelligence to get from one location to the next when not being driven manually by a human.
