I have always wondered what happens to your text message if your phone is switched off. You can switch it back on a few weeks later and then you receive all your texts. Are they all just hanging around in the air or are they stored somewhere ?

Text messages are sent out by the networks via a computer at what's called an SMSC, for short message service centre. The message is delivered to the SMSC, which then tries to send it to your phone. If it can't immediately deliver the message, because your phone is off or out of signal, it will try again a few minutes later. It will keep trying at regular intervals until it is received.

For subscription text alerts like football goalflashes, the provider can configure how long to keep retrying - usually in this case they'll keep the retry fairly short as the messages are no longer relevant after an hour or so. For SMSs you send yourself, the retry is set to a certain time by the networks - it can be up to a couple of weeks.

They're saved for a period of time by the mobile phone companies (might be 3 months or something - can't remember). One reason they are kept is that they can help when solving crimes. If you left your phone off for a couple of weeks, you should get the message when you switch your phone on again. I imagine that the mobile phone company computer keeps trying to send your text periodically until it is registered as received.

The text message is generally stored in the memory card of your phone.

All mobile phones have this function, although some regular telephones (very old models) may not have this memory card, and either the message is stored with the telephone company or simply erased when your phone is turned off.

Text messages use deferred delivery technology. ALL messages are initially stored by the phone network at exchanges. They are only delivered when the phone is switched on and the network has plenty of spare capacity. There is not technical guarantee that they will be delivered at all.

They're floating above your phone except you can't see them. Don't switch on the hoover though, or you'll suck them all up. No, they're stored in a satelite i think, which keeps trying to send until it is sucessful.
