You can learn to know what your cervical fluids mean, and learn to chart your cycle.
I could explain it, but you'll probably get a better understanding by going to a website and getting ALL the information.
I suggest
www.fertilityfriend.com
Or, I also recommend a book, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. I picked it up on ebay for about $16.00 + shipping. It has ALL the information you could ever want, as well as some software to help you chart, etc.
Good luck!

You could try doing a temperature chart. You need a fertility thermometer, they are more sensitive than the standard type. Your doctor or family planning clinic may be able to supply one. You have to take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed and mark it on a temperature chart. Obviously you temperature will vary from day to day, but just before you ovulate your temperture will drop slightly then spike on the day of ovulation. You need to do it for a few months to establish a pattern and it's not 100 percent reliable but it does give you an indication.

What you need to do is keep track of your periods on a calendar Mark the day that you start and the day that you finish. Do this for a few months and then once you see a pattern, count the days betweenthe day that you end your period and the day that you start the next month. Once you know how many days your cycle is, you can count the 3-7 (sometimes 14) days BEFORE your period starts (which is ovulation) and then you'll know! :) Hope this helps.

This is not a scientific answer, just from personal experience. I can tell when I ovulate from the "twinge" I get in either my left or right lower pelvis. Sometimes it is very sharp, other times it is a dull, deep pain.
If trying to conceive, you should have relations a short time (about 24 hours) before you ovaluate or within 12 hours after ovulating.
Good luck!!
