Probably they don't really know what they like or can't put things into perspective. Thirty years from now they'll look back on their college years as the best time of their lives. Being home with friends and family will be remembered as something wonderful and special, unless their families are totally dysfunctional alcoholics, drug users or control freaks. Right now they have some kind of newly found freedoms at the university, but they won't seem all that special later on. They probably are conflicted about parents who still see them and treat them as kids, rather than the emerging adults they are. This is normal and will pass quickly.
None of it has anything to do with Christmas, commericalism or anything like that. It has to do a time in the life of a student when he or she is redefining herself (himself) and setting up his (her) own life. It's tough to live under Mommy and Daddy's rules.

i hate the commercialism and the pressure to go out and buy. I may be young but it's not only me who hates Christmas, my parents don't like it either. It's only about presents, and when there is no family at universities, there is really not much to christmas.

You should say some young people, I know a lot of young people who love Christmas, and I know some older people who don't care for Christmas, and who love Christmas.

Religion seems to be becoming less and less relevant for many adults, so they don't instruct their children on the true meaning of Christmas. This "holy-day" has become less and less holy and more and more materialistic, with the main focus being on toys for children (while they still believe in Santa Claus). I am not religious myself, so I view Christmas simply as a time for giving and sharing, and for getting together with family and friends. I'm OK with the Santa Claus thing for young children as well.

because it's been so over commercialised that the true meaning of it has been forgotten.
apart from the true christian meaning of it , mary, joseph and jesus. it used to just be about family and everyone getting together and enjoying their company but now it just seems to be about who is going to have the biggest and most expensive present.
and it's not just the young that have grown disillusioned with it,
many people with kids and not much money dread it coming as the kids want all the stuff their friends have but the parents can't afford it.

They probably don't like it because of the money they spend around it and the exams after it. I'm at Uni and I love christmas can't wait to go home.
