Which is the shortest distance to ooty from chennai by Car? Also, is the weather at ooty now safe for travel? If i travel to ooty from mysore, what will be the condition of roads approaching ooty? Is it safe to travel with family?

Ooty is well connected by good roads. It is 535 km from Chennai (via Salem), 89 km from Coimbatore, 18 km from Coonoor (via Gudalur), 155 km from Mysore, 187 km from Calicut, 290 km from Bangalore, 281 km from Kochi (via Coimbatore and Palakkad), 236 km from Kodaikanal (via Coimbatore and Palani).

Summer
Max 25ºC, Min 10ºC
If you are travelling in a car, its about 3hrs to Mysore and about 4-4.5hrs from Mysore to Ooty. Add stoppages for food and if you are lucky you may find some wildlife in Bandipur/Mudumalai region, enroute. (there is a shorter/steeper way from Mudumalai for 2/4-wheelers cutting the distance by about 30kms/45mins.
Else you can fly to Coimbatore and then take a train from Mettupalayam or can travel by car or bus from Coimbatore...

From Chennai you drive to Salem via Ulundurpet and Kalla kurichi. Thereafter, you can drive on the National Highway which bypasses Erode & Coimbatore and reach Mettupalaiyam. Thereafter, if you desire a trouble free road, take the Kotagiri road and the to OOTY without touching Coonoor.
The weather at Ooty is cold but safe for travel.

salem-tirupur-mettupalayam,ooty is the shortest road route.
Safe to travel by car. However recent rains have devastated the Mettuplm-ooty road. Better to check out prior to departure.
Even Mysore-Ooty road is badly hit. But it is a lovely route !

Chennai to Ooty: I would suggest the following route by road:
Take Chennai-Bangalore National Highway NH4 up to Ranipet and take NH47 up to Krishnagiri then NH46 up to Avinashi via Salem and Bhavani then take the State Highway to Mettupalayam, which is in the foothills of Nilgiris. Now take the road to Ooty via Kottagiri which is good. Please avoid (Rpt avoid) Coonoor Road which is in a very bad shape. The condition of four lane,National Highways is very good except for one stretch from Krishnagiri to Dharmapuri and some places up to Salem which is under construction. Weather in Nilgiris should be Cold since this is winter in South India. While you are in Ooty please take a short trip to Coonoor and back by the Mountain Railway, it is an experience. Sims Park in Coonoor is as good or even better than Ooty Gardens. Happy journey!
