They are a complete waste of taxpayers' money and will do nothing to prevent crime, terrorism or illegal immigration.
The terrorists who crashed planes on 11 September all had valid IDs and passports as did the Madrid bombers.
If ID cards stopped crime, terrorism and illegal immigration then there would be none in countries with ID cards like Sweden, Portugal, Spain..........

The governments favourite fools at the moment are those whoc an be heard saying "if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about"
that may be the case if you dont value your freedom either.
The same applies if we were all on a 6pm curfew.there would be less streetcrime. But we would be slaves.Limiting our freedom is the greater of the 2 evils.
Im not proposing to hold all the answers to the rights and wrongs of society .But sharing everything i do ,everywhere i go , where i shop , what i like and dont like, with someone who can judge me for it and punish me for it is a greater evil than streetcriminal or fraudster can commit against me.
It is the ultimate orwellian nightmare, and we dont know that half of what comes after, im sure.
say NO! stand up.I would rather have taken my chances with stalin than this crazed tyrant we have in britain.
Please stop it before its too late!

Hi Poppy
There is no reason that I can see for ID cards other than population control. The technology is open to abuse. The algorythym that runs this chip is on the net. Once someone writes a software to read it and releases that to the web then all hell will break loose.
See if you can find a download of a programme that I watched on TV called Suspect Nation and you will be astonished and scared of the things that are going on now.

If you give a monkey's uncle about, for example, your freedom to express yourself in this forum, decline any and every further erradication of your civil liberties, and care passionately about the introduction of a system that has nothing to do with improving our security, but is everything to do with the potential to control, manage, interfere and manipulate all or selected (at their whim) sections of society. This, and future, government's concern appears to be the total control of it's citizens, in what is already the most heavily spied on nation in the "free" world. Those who agree with our "leaders", that "if you have done no wrong you have nothing to fear" are merely allowing the total erosion of our civil freedoms to happen. Go and have a look at www.NO2ID.net, for a little light reading. Oh, and did you know that, if THEY put the WRONG information on your card, YOU will be held liable, and punishable under law, for the miistakes??? They will reserve the right to change the information in case they (or any future regime) want to introduce additional data to th 50 items already chosen. Are you left-handed? Do we really want left-handed people to enjoy the same level of citizenship as right-handed people? Perhaps we had better stick that information on the card, so we can further monitor them. Far-fetched I know, but we are allowing ourselves to be sleep-walked into a totalitarian state.

I presume that the government reserve the right to change information on I.D. cards to cover future changes in legislation, and also if they find that they have been given false information by the applicant after the card has been issued

Just depends on how professional the person checking your ID is. Most people that have a good club with a good reputation pay close attention to fake IDs and catching them because their livelihood and their liquor license is on the line. If you choose to enter a club where the guy on the door is smoking dope or crack or has a beer in his hand you will have a better chance of getting past him because he is just there for the ride; and he probably won't be there next time.

Oh I don't know, perhaps if they wanted to add further details about you, perhaps criminal records, marital status, employment status etc. As far as I am aware these cards are in their early stages so perhaps they may want to update the cards periodically. Thats all i can think of anyway, hope this helps xx

The greatest danger is WHO has access to this personal information.
They cannot even keep credit cards secure and are selling the information.
ID cards will not help security at all, but this is being used as an excuse to further erode our privacy.
The UK is now a police state, thanks to Bliar.
