Actually, I have done this--approached a stranger who looked alone and lonely. My philosophy is that's it takes only a few minutes to be kind to someone, and it can have an enormous impact on that person's outlook.
There have been many times when I've kept going, of course, because I'm focussed on my own life's concerns. But every time I've gone out of my way to be kind I've been glad I did it.
And anyway, someday I may be that person who's alone and lonely, and I would want someone to reach out to me.

For one thing...no stranger is perfect. But I have been known to lend a helping hand to many people. Sometimes, there is someone, who without the help of a stranger, might be lost to an unfortunate situation. Helping someone should always be on the mind of mankind. However, the trial lawyers have made it real easy for the samaritan to pay for his/her good deeds. That's why there are so many unwilling to help someone they don't know.
The old adage is that 'No good deed goes unpunished'

True experience. I have done such a thing. I was way early for work when I was 18 and hung outside the store I work at. One of the new hires, on her first day started talking to me about how she hated her life. I did what I could and offered a listening ear and helped her not commit suicide.

Yes, I'd help. I might not want to, to be perfectly honest, but too many people have lent me a hand when I've needed one in my own life for me to neglect to do the same. You never know when you can change someones' life with just a word of encouragement or a little help when they most need it, and I think we owe it to ourselves to be willing to do that.

It would depend on who I'm with and if i feel comfrtable in the situation. My husband and I took a homeless man out to lunch one day when we were visiting Boston. he was a very nice man with some bad luck. We bought him a winter jacket so he would be as cold.

I would ask them how they were doing an might talk with them for a while. You never know who could help you later on in life when you help them in their time of need.

I doubt if I would help a stranger out of their loneliness but if it was something life threatening then yes I would.
