i think some form of ongoing assessment is better than everything hanging on a couple of hours in an exam room but there will always be some kids who get more 'assistance' with work done out of school. Parents views will differ on whether its 'best' to make them do it all themselves or to give them a hand to get better grades.

I had someone copy my GCSE Coursework for food tech.. it was pointed out to me about 3 days before was due to be handed in, other girl was just given a telling off and not made to re-do her work so I spent an entire day re-doing my coursework from scratch just to make sure I didn't get a fail. Think coursework is a waste of time

It is a way to guarantee higher grades than via the exam only route. As almost all parties involved...
children
teachers
parents
the government
have a vested interest in achieving "good" results then we have a conspiracy of silence.
Only employers (who find that GCSEs have become a worthless qualification) have any interest in rigorous examination.
Fewer votes from employers than teachers+parents = continuously easier exams.
Not what you want to hear kids, but the truth I'm afraid.

The whole GCSE process is ridiculous - my son got a couple of his GCSE's without actually turning up for the exams.
