Go to microsoft.com and type in ''FireWall Disable'' in the search area. It will bring you to the instructions. You then fallow those. Then go on the exceptions tab and then uncheck the IM you are using.

Try using Skype, it gets past more firewall restrictions than any other IM software. I know it's a pain to have to install and set up a new account, but it's worth giving it a go.
