Alexander the Great (Greek: Μέγας Aλέξανδρος, Megas Alexandros born July 356 died BC–June 11, 323 BC), also known as Alexander III, king of Macedon. (Alexander (in proper Greek ALEXANDROS) means in Greek “protector of men”)
Alexander was born in the ancient Greek city of Pella, the capital of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon or Macedonia!
His life was full of remarkable achievements and he took the title great.
He was tutored by the great philosopher Aristotle and he took the best education of the Greek world.
He continued the work of his father in uniting Greece under his command and he also fulfilled the vision of submitting Asia to Greece.
He created a new model army combining all the important military achievements in the Greek world and he build the most powerful Greek army.
From 334 BC till 329 BC he invaded the Persian Empire and he manage to won revenging Greece for the previous Persian attacks. Arrian ("Alexander the Great" 1,16,7) describes the following incident: After winning the battle of Granicus ...
"He [Alexander the Great] sent to Athens three hundred Persian panoplies to be set up to Athena in the acropolis; he ordered this inscription to be attached with the following inscription: “Alexander son of Philip and the Greeks, except the Lacedaemonians, set up these spoils from the barbarians dwelling in Asia"
(He won all 3 battles against the mighty Persian army; Battle of Granicus, Battle of Issus, and Battle of Gaugamela.)
From 326 BC he invaded India and again he won creating a Gigantic Greek empire that started from Greece and reached all the way to India. (In modern day Pakistan).
On the afternoon of June 10–11, 323 BC, Alexander died of a mysterious illness in the palace of Nebuchadrezzar II of Babylon. He was just one month shy of attaining 33 years of age. Various theories have been proposed for the cause of his death which includes poisoning by the sons of Antipater or others, sickness that followed a drinking party, or a relapse of the malaria he had contracted in 336 BC.
But his main success was not the battle or the military skills but the spread of Greek language and Greek culture through out the world paving the way to Christianity.
He fused Greek culture with Asian Elements forming the culture that was called Hellenistic (from “Hellenic” meaning “Greek”).
His successors continued to spread the Greek culture and the Greek kingdoms that followed his empire controlled the word for nearly 300 years.
{As I can see one of the other answers is completely wrong and quite confusing!
Do not confuse the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia or Macedon with the modern Slavic/Albanian republic of Macedonia (or FYROM or Makedonija) as they are not related at all. The confusion has started a few years ago because that small state started to use the name “Republic of Macedonia” causing a great confusion with real Macedonia in Greece.}

First of all I would like to say, Alexander The Great was a Greek man, from a Greek Macedonia. The Macedonia Today, constists of Yogoslavians, Serbians, Bulgarians..and probably more. Therefore, to me Alexander is and always will be THE GREAT, because calling him Alexander The Macedonian would be offensive to anyone of Hellenic Blood. Alexadar Makedonski wrote: "Should this be a shock to anybody (with a little intelligence)? What else could you possibly call a country, other than that which represents the people who created the culture & history of the region in question? " Macedon is Hellenic. All the evidence points to this. Everything excavated has Greek on it, nothing in slavic because Slavs did not exist in the area in those days. Now they climb under there Tito blankets, rest their heads on their pillows and have their dreams of Alexander as a slav speaking Bulgarian! SO TO ME, AND ALL PEOPLE OF HELLAS, ALEXANDER THE GREAT ...WAS...IS...AND ALWAYS WILL BE...GREEK. SO CHEERS MY FRIENDS, TO ALEXANDER THE GREAT GREEK!
