The best way is from the roof. Also not the cheapest. Closed cell foam insulation and new roofing is the way to go. Ceiling fans do help.

It should have insulation built into it already unless it's a cabin in the woods or is 100 years old. They use sheets of foam that are about an inch thick then cover with very thin drywall. There should still be a lot of beam exposed, If they are fake beams you can take them down but why bother. a ceiling fan does wonders for keeping the heat from escaping through a vaulted ceiling.

If you are planning for new construction consider using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). The R value is relatively very good.
