I submitted a poem to poetry.com and they sent me mail and said it's been selected as a semi-finalist,so i had to send back in this artist proof page and they said i didn't need to do anything right now. but they way they talk, i'm going to have my poem published regardless of whether or not i become the "grand prize winner" and all. so i guess it'll be in there anyway?

These types of places accept any and all poems submitted. The vast majority of them are scams and you really should NOT involve yourself with them. These types of places appeal to your vanity and hope that you will buy into their scam. Again, this is NOT true publishing as they publish everyone's work no matter how good or bad it is (and much of it is REALLY BAD). Down the road, you may be asked for money for an anthology (a book of poems in which yours may appear) or some other fee. And even if you are not, these places are really rank and many have been exposed as the frauds they are on news magazine programs. DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THIS TYPE OF PUBLISHING. Trust me, these places are in business only for themselves, and that grand prize you mentioned is awarded...to themselves! Believe me, you want to avoid this kind of publishing.

Poetry.com is what is referred to by many as a "vanity press". They will publish your poem, and most others submitted to them, in the hopes that you will want to buy one or more copies of the book you are published in.

Up until a few years ago, it was difficult at best to have your poetry, fiction, etc., published by being accepted by a non-vanity publisher. Many authors resorted to self-publishing if they were trying to publish their own book or poetry collection and ended up with boxes of their work sitting in the basement. Now its possible to use a "publish on demand" site, such as cafepress.com to publish your poetry as a book, on T-shirts, bumper stickers, etc., and have them printed as they are ordered from the company (by yourself or others). Setting up a site with them costs a little as $0 if you want to offer one item, to about $5 per month if you want to offer many different things. D.J. Lachance, MIlwaukee, WI, U.S.A.

get on their website and read the terms and conditions of the contract it should be on the first page of the site that should tell you what will be happening to your poem and congrats they get thousands and thousands of entries so your poem must be really good also try and get it copywrited quickly because once it appears on the web every lazy thief trying to pass themselves off as a poet will claim it as theirs
