I go to university here.

Generally speaking, all the clubs/bars are pretty awful. But if you have to decide then I suggest you choose either Boylenz or what used to be xS and is now called Mantra. I think it's called Mantra anyway.

For bars, the best place is the new row of bars opposite HSBC and next to Scarborough Council and the Town Hall on St. Nicholas Street.

Other clubs are VivaZ (a rock club), Studio 1 (a small club with 2 rooms) and Laughtons (a very small club).

If you need any more info just ask.

Lived in Scarborough all my life and yes it's not brilliant although it is getting a lot better!
New bars on St nicholas cliff/street include The Blue Lounge, Rileys (snooker), Barracuda, Yates's (just refurbished). Further down on St thomas street you have the Opera House Casino (membership required - join and go straight in, has a nice restaurant), Mist (bistro-bar with no smoking policy), Olivers Bar then you've got Bolyns Nightclub (bit of a cattle market!).
On Huntress Row you have Vivaz, Laughtons has closed, The Pickwick (bit of a dive).
Further up the precinct there is manhattens nightclub (used to be Xs), Bar 69, Cloisters and Red Square all down York Place off the precinct.
Also at the end of Huntress Row you have Bar-2-B, St Nicholas Bar (near the Hotel of same name).
Having written this i'm hoping that the Birthday is for someone over 18 and not a child!
if it is for a child then Little Hoppers near Morrison supermarket is good (about 2-3 miles out of town).
If this is no good then try the Local Tourist Information Office.
