I am from Kazakhstan. I have 5 years of experience of life and work in the "oil and gas" part of Kazakhstan (Atyrau city), western part of Kazakhstan.
I think if you possess skills and experience valuable for this industry, you will be in demand by many companies there.
The region is rapidly growing and if you decide to go there, it is a good place to work on rotation, esp. if ur company covers all the expenses (accommodaton, food and all that). If you want to bring ur family along , you will have to make a research on schools and other arrangements for them. I know many expats who live there with their families and don't wanna leave. The climate is kinda harsh in the western part (winds) , however the salaries are pretty rewarding. The expat communtities are large, most of the expats are europeans. Kazakhs are friendly with everybody provided the adequate respect is shown towards them.
Re the major oil companies : it depends which skills u have and if u r willing to work for an operator or a service provider.
AGIP KCO (consortium of several major companies ENI, Shell, Chevron, Exxon) and TengizChevronOil , KazMunaiGas (national) are the largest operators,
the service is provided by numerous companies both national and international: Halliburton, Baker Hughes , Schlumberger etc.
To get a job in any of them you need to send a resume to their HR dept.
PS I also think Borat is stupid.

Discovery well Kashagan East 1 was a single vertical well that was drilled in 2000 to a total depth of 5,200m. During tests the well flowed at a rate of 600m³ of oil a day and 200,000m³ of gas a day on a 32 / 64in choke.
Kashagan West 1 was the second discovery well. Discovered in 2001, tests showed that the well flowed at a rate of 3,400bopd, while the oil gravity measured between 42° and 45° API.
Kashagan East 2 was discovered in late 2001 and was drilled to a depth of 4,142m and flowed at a rate of 7,400 bopd. Dresser Services was awarded the integrated drilling contract.

i know several people from Kasakhstan, so it occurs to me, if they are leaving to get better jobs and improve their lives, how great can Kazakhstan be? there are a lot of problems there; tensions between Muslims and non-muslim, poor infrastructure and social support, severe environmental degradation (thank you oil men)
can't see any good reason to consider working there
you may gain some cash but you'll lose far more
