i have been with bt broadband since they started doing adsl and have currently got a bt home hub with a 8mbit connection speed(3.5m/bit real spped)
with the bt home hub connection speeds can fluctuate as engineers tweak with the line to get optimun speed, but this is normally within the first week or two
with regards to the bt hub speed, you can get a complete speed test report by going to http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp,and run the spped test, this may include accepting to install some active x controls but this is safe
a full report will then be avalible then with all tests included(upload, download speeds)
another way of finding your connection speed i by running a "ping test"...to do this go start>programs>accesories>command prompt>then type in the dialg box ping www.bbc.co.uk and press return...what happens then is 4 packets of data is sent to the web address(url) and then returned to complete a round trip...this is calculated in milliseconds...a good speed is 15 to 30 milliseconds ,but anything above 50milliseconds is not good
you can use any website you want, and speeds can drop during peak times
another tip : if your download speeds drop suddenly, then you should do what they call a "cold boot".this is done by a) switch off all computers connected to the hub b)unplug the power adapter from the wall c)dissconnect the power plug from the hub d)leave the hub off for 30 seconds to 1 minute e) after the minute period connect the hub back to the power supply and wait for the lights to come back on and when all 4 are on press the wireless button on the back of the hub for 10 seconds f)switch all computers back on and wait until fully booted g)press internet explorer and check your download speeds and browsing speed
there should be a marked improvement after a cold boot, and i normally do this around once every 6 months, any more regular may reduce the hubs shelf-life
if you go to network connections in control panel you should find your ethernet adapter speed,by clicking on the properties option by your adapter, but this is only a rough guide
i hope this has helped with your query
good luck
