What do people mean when they say they're getting an elf for christmas?

Alot of my friends have been saying that they're getting an ELF for christmas?!? One of my friends last year said she got one, but what does that mean? Can you REALLY get one for christmas?

Dunno....apparently they have found communities of elf-like creatures in Iceland....
