some gm models required the park lights to be on for the underhood light to work, check for power with a test light and if you can try the bulb in a socket that you now works to see if that bulb works, you can use bulbs with different sizes andd shapes as long as the base of the bulb is the same, contact style and position etc

Get out your test light, start at the socket for the bulb. Do you have 12 volts there? If yes, put in the right bulb, making sure the socket isn't corroded, and it should work. If no, go back to the switch. Do you have voltage on the side that goes to the socket? If yes, replace the wire. If no, do you have voltage on the other side? If yes, replace the switch, if no, look for a fuse that is blown.

As I have told other people, please check your fuses first. than check the plug where the wire comes out of the hood and connects to the wiring.
Yes you should replace the bulb with a type your auto manufacturer recommends, but usally any single contact (one brass button on bottom of bulb) bulb should light.
Hope this helps

I suggest you get the correct bulb for your car and see if it works. If it don't work after that then you know it isn't the bulb and you need to check further for the problem.

Most of the previous answers are valid, but a check to see if the wiring is disconnected at the connector or possibly broken since the hood must be opened frequently. Should you find a defective murcury switch @ the light, I suggest getting a good one from a junk yard. (They can test it for you.)

hold the balb up to the light and snap it with your finger.if the filliment shakes then the balb is blown.also use a test light and see if you got current from the wire.it could just be the balb fixture.i got a 88 olds and the parking lights has to be on before the hood light works..

I would not...
i would get a clip on light that clips to the battery and when i need it just one to the positive and one to the negitave end of story....
if you have on idea of electory than do not mess with it it could cause other problems....... (fire, shorting out the hole car) or just go to the shop and ask there

Look on the bottom of the bulb. It should only have ONE electrode in the middle of it. Not two.
