Yes, a fan could be the culprit. But you might want to check other fans such as the video card, it has also been my experience that if a hard drive is overheating it could be that too.
What you may want to do (if comfortable with it), is buy some prepackaged can of compressed air (at fry's or best by?) Then open the case and blow out the dust, concentrate on the processor where there may be a whole bunch or where the fans are on the video card.... cuz even if the fans are still going the dust is usually what makes the air not move.

This is sometimes caused by a virus or spyware. Check your anti-virus program and try to run a full scan. If it reboots, then try to get into SAFE MODE. Just hit F8 during the restart sequence and pick SAFE MODE from the boot menu. Then run your antivirus scan.
You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Stop working on PC. Suffer to stay off-line. Clean-up. Verify your ultimate works. Restart. enter BIOS. Verify the CPU temp. For that, I bought another chipset. But ask for some expert with benchmark, to be sure. You might be right. Do it now and work no more. Luck!
