Punishments NEVER work. They just make a child angry, and more determined to be extra careful not to be caught in future. They are usually cruel, and done because parents want to take 'revenge'. True discipline helps a child to learn how to behave in moral/ethical/socially acceptable ways, learning alongside parents. It may occasionally be necessary to create some logical consequences (such as paying for a broken window, or returning stolen things from a shop) but should always be done in conjunction with lots of hugging, and talking, and discussion about why certain actions are not acceptable. In this situation, your daughter was up too late and was probably over-tired. I assume she ate a proper dinner before coming home - if not, then as it was so late she should have been allowed to eat whatever she wanted. 7.30 is way too late for a small child to be eating a proper meal. And all snacks should be nutritious anyway - if you don't count cookies as 'food' then you should not have them in the house! There are plenty of good snacks a child can have - fruit, nuts, yogurt, dried fruit - which can always be a substitute for a meal if she is not particularly hungry. Trying to suggest that some foods are 'good' and others - which you have bought and keep at home - are 'bad', or that some are only 'treats' is setting your child up for some kind of eating disorder. When you buy special treat for special occasions, then they should be eaten as part of a meal, and enjoyed as a different form of food. Please relax, and allow your daughter to be a little girl. If she's hungry, and you haven't cooked a meal that she likes, then you should have some healthy snacks that she can eat instead.

i doubt if a peasant would have got near enough to steal anything belonging to the King ,but any one caught stealing could be hanged o r have their head chopped of .Head chopping was a public entertainment hundreds of people used to come out to watch and cheer .2 or 3 hundred years after that the sentence for stealing was still hanging or deportation The law included every one man woman or child

It would be very unusual for a peasant to get near enough to the king to steal his food.

Well maybe the peasant deserved the food in the first place.
Maybe the king did not give him enough food and the king wanted it for
himself.
That selfish king!!

It all depends on the king- they had the power to order that you be killed, jailed for however long they wanted or not punished at all. I don't know what the specific laws were at the time.
