we all hear the line "Visions of sugarplumbs" but, what is a sugarplumb?

Animefan, At the time "The Night Before Christmas" was written, a sugar plum was a small candy made from flavored boiled sugar. Later on, some peoples covered it with chocolate, but the standard sugar plum was round or oval and had fruit flavoring.

Back in my Grandparents day most all candies were referred to as sugarplums...so the line in the story Night Before Christmas when "the children were nestled all snug in their beds where visions of sugarplums danced in their heads" literally refers to visions of candy dancing in their heads
