Could be your hard drive is failing, start backing up your pictures, music, favorites, etc. How to find out, download something called S.M.A.R.T. hard drive diagnosis, it checks to see if your hard drive is ready for the ole dirt nap (it's dieing). Sorry, I don't know of any free software, but some SMART stuff lets up use it a few times. The noise, does it sound like a grinding sound, could be the small ball bearings going. A hard drive is both a mechanical and electrical component, gets lots of use. Best of luck
