I would go with the PS2. Nintendo has always been behind the curve when it comes to video games. Seriously, "Game Cube"?
Sony is a leading technology that will continue to grow. Nintendo has not produced a quality gaming device since the original Nintendo game system.

Haha! Awesome.

Listen up Nintendo Nay-Sayers. Nintendo planted the first flags and and basicly invented the industry. Before that it was ten kids with Atari 7800's. That's not to say Atari didn't play an important role, but Nintendo really brought it to the market place. Without Atari, there probably wouldn't be a Nintendo and like-wise without a Nintendo, there probably wouldn't be a Playstation. How far would the PSX have gone without the massive fan base of SquareSoft, a fan base that followed them to the PSX from the Super Nintendo and the Nintendo.
To say that Nintendo has 'always been a step behind' is not only completely inaccurate, it's just plain hysterical. I do understand what you're saying, but it's not a step behind. Nintendo has always been a step in a *different direction*. Sometimes it pays off, like the DS. Sometimes it hurts, like the GameCube. But they're out there doing things that haven't been before and there will always be a place in the market for that. Just like there will be a larger place in the market for the same standard fomula that is known to work. Also it's really kinda funny how you say the NES was the last quality gaming system they released, since it's almost impossible to find an NES that works properly and the SNES is still a legend in the minds of any gamer above the age of 20. I guess that goes to show what you'd know about it.
The argument he makes for the PS2 is like it's a PS3, but it's not. The games that are out for the PS2 are going to be about all there ever will be. The last blockbuster you can expect is FF XII, after that don't expect any Grand Theft Auto's or any of the other huge titles that have made the PS2 so great.
From a Technichal aspect, the PS2 and the Wii are pretty much the same thing. Comperable processing and graphical power. Arguments could be made either way, but it's just hair-splitting and the difference is so minimal, you'd never notice.
So, the informed answer is if you are more interested in conquoring a bunch of games that have been out for a while, but are new to you, deffinetly go for the PS2. You'll be able to get PS2 games absolutly dirt cheap in the comming months and it will deffinetly keep you busy.
If you'd rather take a step into the next gen systems and try something a little different, you want a Wii and it won't disapoint.
Infact, based on the games you've mentioned, I'd say a Wii. Nintendo is infamous for quirky, off-beat games like the ones you've mentioned. There will be a *bounty* of titles like that and the new control system will make the way they are played all the more enjoyable. The PS2 is a better choice for Grand Theft Auto knock-offs and RPG's, which it doesn't sound like you're into.

I suggest the Nintendo Wii. Although the price may be a bit higher, the innovative controller is a new and fun way to play your games.
