first-the filter will be at the area of the inlet-that will be a large grill (usually) or where the a/c is. it will be in the front of the a/c or under it. they are placed differently but ALWAYS at the a/c unit in the house. when you find the a/c unit and the filter you determine what filter you need by measuring the old filter. you measure the length and the width. that's the size you need. as for type-that's up to you they should all fit. they go from cheap ($1-2) to units you clean and reuse that can cost up to $100.
how often it's changed/cleaned depends on your particular circumstances. if you have pets-then you will need to clean/change more frequently. general rule-if you have a long haired pet then every one to two weeks. if not then every month. when in doubt compare to a new one. hold the old one up to the light and then compare it to the new one held up to the light.
you can clean the cleanable ones with a hose or in the shower(if you have a hand held sprayer). if you live in an apartment then find out who is responsible for changing the filter. the primary purpose for changing the filter is to reduce the load/strain on the compressor and, thereby, reduce the electric bill. I haven't lived in an apartment for 35 years or so so I,m sorta behind the curve on that.

First you have to locate the filter. It should be somewhere between the cold air return (large vent in floor, wall, or ceiling that sucks air IN when furnace is running) and the furnace itself. You will probably have to turn a screw or two to release the cover, but some have a wire bale that holds them in, or some just slip into a slot in the ductwork, or lay flat near the blower. Once you remove the filter note the size and type on the old one. If it seems to fit well (not crushed to fit but still covers the entire opening that the air enters) buy that size again. If it doesn't seem to fit, note the size of that one and try to determine how much larger or smaller it should be to fit right. I own alot of rentals and I have seem people jam whatever filter they have inot a furnace. If it buckles from being too large or leaves gaps from being too small air can enter the furnace without passing through the filter which is not good for the furnace. I usually write the proper size on the furnace with a permanent marker. There are several types of filters. The cheapest are the fiberglass and they should be replaced monthly. I think the more expensive ones that last three months or so are worth it. They cost about three dollars each. There are also allergy filters and other more expensive types but I don't think they are worth the money.
Good luck.

No, this is your evaporator coil. It is good that it is clean. The filters should be before this coil. This coil is actually what the filters job is to keep clean. Look for a long thin metal panel on the furnace about as wide as the end of a filter or two (1" or so). It could be an access to the filter.

simple! i hope you saved your old filter. just look on the side that has the size on the filter.look in the manual. the size is there. take out old filter and slide new one in. my furnace uses 25 ins. by 20 ins. by 1 in. ask at a store that sells them.they might have a book with types of filters, get serial number from furnace before you go to the store.

There should be a tag on the unit that gives make and model number. You can than try to look it up on the net for a manual or for the manufacturer and call them for manual and information on filter change out.

Open your furnace and remove the filter. Take it to home depot or Lowes and they will give you another one.

it should say on the filters you have in now, if not, you can measure them, the go to home depot, Lowe's etc and check the measurements. Also you can buy ones that you cut yourself to the correct size. They are washable and reusable

Take it out and measure it, then you'll know what size to buy. If in doubt, bring the old one with you.
