1989 Honda Accord LX. 141k. During the winter I can get the car started and then suddenly it stops and dies. Whenever I try again, the Engine turns but that's all. Tried Jump Starting...didn't work. Only when it becomes warm again, or atleast 12+ hour later I tried jump-starting it again and it got started (that was only once). Whenever I take it to the garage, they just charge the battery and it gets started....they say there is no problem with the battery....I think they have no idea 'bout the real problem. Help!

before the problem araises (when it first gets started)....it dies as if it just lost its breath.....it suddenly stops. Next 1/2 times, it feels like its gonna start, but never helps.....after that, the engine turns but no sign of life.

Check to see if it has spark if not Hondas are known for having bad distributors. We have replaced many, used seems to be the best due to cost. Used run 100-150 rebuilt 400+ Confirm your findings this with a reputable mechanic.

well could be three things, first find another mechanic, second the battery could test good sitting there but when cranking it drops below the required voltage to turn the computor on, last, sounds like you need a good charging/starting system check. there can be other problems but you need to start there. the vehicle will start with a battery charger on it at the shop but thats not addressing the problem, oh and the above answer is also true, certain years of hondas had crappy distributors

I have the same car, same miles, same problem although mine seems less severe. My car starts first time every time, but in cold weather starts slowing down after about 30 miles. It stranded me this morning on the highway but started up again after about 30 minutes. My advantage is that I work at a Honda dealership.

A couple of the technicians told me that there is a warm-air valve inside the air intake. It is under the disk-shaped thingy (tech term) on top of the air intake with a vacuum hose coming out of it. This metal flap inside your air intake closes to take warm air off the exhaust manifold to keep your carb from freezing up. They tell me to wire it closed for the winter months which I have not done yet but will today or tomorrow. Good luck!

If it settles down it may be the hysteresis interior the thermostatic swap, or loss of hysteresis. The substitute area won't have adequate to maintain it from triggering. hysteresis is the version between the on-threshold and the off-threshold. particularly the off threshold is below the on threshold. If it settles down continuously you could forget approximately it. in all probability the warmth interior the engine middle leaking back out for the period of the water and heating the thermostat up a 2d or 0.33 time.
