Santa Claus only started being drawn as dressed in red in the mid 19th Century. The Original Father Christmas, St. Nicholas, was dressed in full Bishop's gear, with Crozier, mitre, and long white, gold-embroidered vestments and white gloves. Traditionally he is followed by a black servant (known as Black Peter) who carries coal and switches for the bad kids.
The punchline is that the original St. Nicholas was Turkish in the first place...

He used to wear green, but Coca Cola decided to use him in their advertising campaign one year and turned him red. He's been wearing red ever since (this was a long time ago, but not sure when).

Because of Coca-Cola's influence.
Father Christmas always used to be dressed in green. However, after a Cola advert dressed him in red, it has became widely accepted.
