Is this something you naturally have or can you be trained

She should REALLY join, especially if she enjoys singing. You can be trained, sometimes even when your tone deaf. It does take a lot of extra work in that case, though.

I started in my school's choir barely able to sing a note on pitch. Now, I'm section leader in Honor Choir, my school choir, and in solo ensemble. It definitely builds self-confidence, and gives you a good attitude. I couldn't live without choir.

No matter how hard it might seem for your friends at times, but its worth it

If she lives in Scotland she could come and join Kirkcaldy Choral Union. We don't audition, and the satisfaction is just by being with a group of other people who share the same interest.
She could look up 'www.gerontius.net' to find choirs near to where she lives.

some people are tone deaf and i doubt your friend is thou, as most tone deaf people do not want to sing in public. a voice can be trained but it could be wise to have vocal tution on a one to one basis first to build confidence and aquire basic skills

Providing your friend can sing in tune her voice can be trained to be much better than it is. After only three weeks she will be able to hear a difference.
However if she is tone deaf no amount of training will help - sorry.

As long as you are not completely tone deaf, then you can be taught how to sing. I think most people would be quite pleasantly surprised with their voices, after even one short lesson.

you can have it both ways. usually someone with natural talent still needs training to refine it. She should have fun - and she'll learn quite a bit about her voice.
