Sunrise and sunset refer to a time of day, not an actual happening.

because saying

1. "the sun has set" is quicker than saying

2 "I see that we are in that position in the cycle of rotation of the earth where this portion of the earth that we now occupy has just begun to be on the non-sun side of the globe".

And because we are talking in terms of every-day earth-bound activities there are no adverse consequences to talking in terms of the sun setting: we are not going to take any incorrect decision based on statement 1 that we would avoid if we made statement 2. The "cash value" of the two statements WITHIN THE ACTIVITIES WE ARE TALKING ABOUT reamins the same and so, for everyday purposes it is true.

The sun actually moves at several million miles per second, as do we all. It is only in relative motion that it appears to be stationary, but even that is not the case.

It looks like it rises and sets over the horizon, not around the Earth

the sun isnt stationary...its moving away from the point of the 'big bang' @ uber high speeds...plus it rotates around its own axis...AND the sun rises and sets because ur frame of reference is the earth

cause from where we stand, that's what the sun appears to be doing. anyway can you think of a better word to use???
saying that "let's go to the beach to see the Earth turning!"
just doesn't sound the same.
God bless,
