I have heard NOTHING good about those money-making machines.. I would never have one because just to look at them one should know that they are NOT a vacumn machine except possibly for the smallest particles of dust.. I considered them(those machines) as just another way that companies are getting money from people

We have a cat and a dog. Neither are long hair so the Roomba does a pretty good job. Just to set expectations though, we only run it on one room at a time and clean the hair off of the brushes after each run. iRobot does have a new version of the Roomba (for pets) which just means that they have a brush cleaner that is easier than the older one.
We onw two Roombas for about two years now and with regular cleaning, have not broken down. The most common problem comes if I don't do a quick cleaning after it's done vacuuming and some of the senors get dirty. Blowing out the dust from it fixes that problem.

I have two dogs, and the amount of time I spend cleaning the filter completely negates the convenience of having the contraption. Seriuosly, I envisioned my life running smoothly, my home clean my roomba to be my savior! Suddenly my rooms would have fresh flowers and look like I gave Martha Stewart tips on decorating. What I have is a little machine that my dogs are terrified of, so to even start it blows my little fantasy. Then it clogs after about 3 minutes, beeping every 20 secs to tell me to clean filter, so I have cowering dogs, beeping vacuum cleaner, and then I let it go again and same story! I found the machine is great in places that have no obstacles, animals, cords, magazines, the thread of a throw blanket perhaps being on the floor (oh, that machine can do a number with a rogue thread that's really still attached to something). I currently use it to vacuum under my stairs and behind my couches (but I have to pull them out first) I do have to say it works GREAT on those spaces....I'm sticking to an all Swiffer way of life (I do NOT work for them, but I love the wet jet thing and the new sticky vac/sweep thing) it's a little more manual but in the end a little easier for me.

I'm guessing you have hard floors(wood, tile, ect.) The best way to get the animal hair up is w/ a large dust mop, its fast, cheap and you can wash the mop head. With a roomba you will spend more time cleaning out the" little" dirt compartment then it would take to do it w/ a dust mop.

I have seven cats and I thought that would be a dream come true. The roomba was not. Back to my Hoover.
